End of Year Prizegiving 2014

Room 5 students were again prominent at the 2014 Maeroa School Prizegiving with Harry Yates being deservedly awarded the Sportsman of the Year trophy, and Carl Stevens was recognised for his Rotary Scholarship win, the Academic Competitions trophy winner, and was the winner of the Shelley Reeves Memorial   Trophy for outstanding ability across the strands in Technology. Bailey Guilford was awarded the Citizenship Award for Room 5 and the winners of the Merit Certificates for academic success were awarded to Brooke Williams, Carl Stephens, Aimee Hudson and Joaquina Romera.

A number of Room 5 students have been featuring in the 2014 school Talent Quest and qualifying for the final. The winning act featured Aidan in a group called "Fearless" with other students from Kahikatea! Students from the Kahikatea team featured in all top 3 places!

Rotary Scholarship Winner 2014

Carl Stephens has won the Maeroa Intermediate School Rotary Scholarship for 2014 following in the foot steps of a number of previous Room 5 students, when it was announced by the Rotary Club at the first of the major school Assemblies this term. He was one of six finalists which included Robbie Wilkinson, also from Room 5. Another Room 5 student, Brooke Williams, was one of six finalists in the Zonta Awards. The Rotary Club of Frankton scholarship has been named after the first ever Principal of Maeroa Intermediate, Mr Trevor Church. Congratulations Carl, you are a deserved winner.

Spelling Bee Champion 2014

A Room 5 student last Thursday night won the school Spelling Bee held in the school auditorium before an audience of parents, whanau, fellow students and teachers. The winner was Natalie Posa, a year 7 student, who held off all other competitors to be the last one standing after a group of four finalists became the last obstacle. Members of this group included Brooke Williams and Carl Stephens. Well done Natalie.... we are proud of you.

Class Farewell to Teacher

The class farewelled their teacher Mr Metcalfe at a shared lunch yesterday as he will be absent for the rest of the school year due to a hip replacement operation and time required for recovery. Libby and Bailey spoke on behalf of the class, presented him with a giant "Get Well Soon" card signed by the class, and wished their teacher well, and Georgia presented a specially baked cake for the occasion. Mr Metcalfe is aiming to be back for the last day of the school year.

Chess Nationals

In the recent holidays I went down to Nelson to the Chess Champions Trophy tournament. Out of 80 kids from  juniors to seniors I got 33rd and also achieved a half point off the best girl, making myself tied with second best girl. (I personally prefer saying that I was the best Intermediate School girl) -Jasmine Podmore


2014 Athletic Sports

Once again Room 5 students featured at this year's School Athletics Championships with a number of successes. The High Jump was a particularly successful event with Campbell Brown winning the Year 7 Boys event, Nicole Allen and Amelia Shepherd achieving 1st and 2nd in the Year 8 Girls event, and Harry Yates coming 3rd in the Year 8 Boys event. Libby Williams came 3rd in the Year 8 Girls Cricket Ball Throw and Holly Walsh came 3rd in the Year 8 Girls Discus. Campbell also gained a 1st in the Year 7 Boys Long Jump, and Harry went on to win the 100 metres and 200 metres sprint finals. Amelia won the 200 metres final, and Nicole also got 2nd in this event. Many other Kahikatea students also achieved placings in events, and the relay teams with many Room 5 students included also achieved placings. The Year 7 Girls came 3rd, Year 7 Boys came 2nd, Year 8 Girls 2nd, and the Year 8 Boys were winners on the day! The points competition will be announced at an Assembly in the near future!

Sports Camp Success 2014

Harry Yates- overall winner of the Top Sports Boy at Sports Camp.
Five Room 5 students participated in the school's team at Sports Camp competing against 6 other Intermediates from around the country including two from Auckland, at Totara Springs at Matamata. The Room 5 students were Harry Yates, Bailey Guilford, Aidan Scott-Nanthasack, Alex Carter and Robbie Wilkinson. Maeroa won the award for the top overall school, with Harry named the Top Sports Boy of the camp. The team made 16 finals overall and took away trophies for Top School, Top Sports Boy, Rugby, Boys Basketball, Girls Volleyball, Swimming, Team Triathlon, Boys Table Tennis, and the TEAM CHEER COMPETITION. The team was also runners-up in Netball, Mixed Touch, Mixed Softball, Athletics, Girl's Hockey, Boy's Hockey, Cross Country, Indoor Boy's Hockey, Indoor Girl's Hockey and Quality Living.

Mrs Bain's Farewell Assembly

On Friday 29 August, the school Principal Mrs Delwyn Bain retired after spending all but one year of her 45 year teaching career, at Maeroa Intermediate School in Hamilton. The school gathered at an Assembly in the school auditorium and farewelled her with an item from both the Pasifika and Kapa Haka groups, and the school sung the chorus's to the Sarah McLachlan song "I Will Remember You" with soloists by past and present students from our team. The ceremony was co-hosted by Room 5's Robbie Wilkinson and amongst the speakers at the event, Jasmine Podmore from Room 5 back-grounded the gift from the school of a quilt made by the students. Also to speak was the Board Chairperson Mr Mike Smith, and present with Mrs Bain were members of her family.

Service Learning Project- Red Nose Day Fundraising for Cure Kids

The Room 5 Service Learning Project for 2014 is underway with fundraising activities for Red Nose Day for the Cure Kids charity. On Monday of the week of activities, the students in the class made CHURROS, DUMPLINGS, SHERBET and FRUIT KEBABS for sale to the school at lunch break. On Wednesday, the students made and sold TACOS, and on Thursday the students made and sold ICE-CREAMS. Altogether the class raised $628.50, an excellent effort.

Three members of the school "Road Show" production are from Room 5 and were front and centre at the performance for the school in our auditorium today. The show has been completely devised, created, written, and directed by the students, and will go "on the road" to be performed at contributing schools' this week. The Room 5 students are Robbie Wilkinson, Natalie Posa and Aidan Scott-Nanthasack.

2014 Jump Jam team Competition


The Kahikatea team Jump Jam team at the 2014 Competition is pictured above after competing in the school final in front of a very enthusiastic audience. Unfortunately, they were not placed in the top three, but we still thought they did a fantastic job and represented us all really well. The team finished in a very respectable 4th place. Room 5 participants were Robbie Wilkinson, Aidan Scott-Nanthasack, Holly Walsh, Ariana Ewart-Fuller and Natalie Posa.
